Be Your Own Valentine: The Importance of Self-Love

As we approach Valentine’s Day, we at Supportive Engagement encourage you to consider being your own Valentine this year. This is a time to focus intentionally on self-love, self-care, and allowing yourself to take up space—just as you are.

“You are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress, simultaneously.” – Sophia Bush

A phrase that often comes up in therapy sessions is that “two things can be true at the same time.” We can be imperfect and still worthy. We can be growing and still enough.

What Is Self-Love?

Self-love is defined as:

  • Having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness.

  • Taking care of your own needs without sacrificing your well-being to please others.

While we all crave safety, belonging, and validation from others, it’s possible to balance nurturing our relationships with others while also nurturing the relationship we have with ourselves.

Why Self-Care Matters for Mental Health

The relationship we have with ourselves is one of the most important relationships we will ever experience. If we constantly pour from an empty cup or sacrifice our well-being for others, our mental health will suffer.

Think about how we recharge electronic devices when the battery is low. Yet, we often expect ourselves to function at full capacity without giving ourselves time and space to recharge.

The Power of Self-Compassion

We encourage you to reflect on this quote by Alex Elle:

“Reconsider talking down to yourself when you backtrack. Self-hatred is not fertile ground for your healing and growth. Self-forgiveness and compassion are.”

Practicing self-compassion can be transformative. Instead of criticizing yourself, try using affirmations to shift your mindset.

Daily Affirmations for Self-Love

Affirmations can help rewire negative thought patterns and promote self-acceptance. Try saying these to yourself daily:

  • I am worthy of love and kindness.

  • I am enough just as I am.

  • I am not for everyone, and that’s okay.

  • I am trying my best, and that is enough.

Simple Ways to Practice Self-Care

Self-care isn’t just about pampering yourself—it’s about creating habits that support your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Consider incorporating these self-care practices into your routine:

  • Morning stretches or deep breathing exercises

  • Nature walks

  • Speaking to yourself with love and respect

  • Making time for activities you enjoy

  • Learning to say no to things that don’t serve you

  • Decluttering your home and workspace

  • Exercising

  • Make a list of things you love about yourself

  • Gratitude journaling

Embrace Self-Love Every Day

Self-love is a journey, not a destination. Experiment with different self-care practices and affirmations to find what resonates with you the most. No matter where you are in your journey, remember that you are worthy, loved, and enough—just as you are.
